Maximize Your Chances to See the Northern Lights
By Jari "Jarcce" Romppainen
Welcome to the World of Aurora Borealis
Hi, I'm Jari, or Jarcce like many people know me on social media. I invite you to join me on the adventure of a lifetime, to the land where the night sky comes alive and silence turns into a story. It's important to understand that it is never just about aurora. Even if you are hunting them seriously, there is always more than just the lights: people, campfire, nature, good stories and the trip overall. I prefer to focus on the whole experience, not just the aurora. When they finally appear, you can enjoy much more and create a memory you will never forget.
Over the past seven years, I've spent countless nights under the starry skies of Lapland, learning what it truly takes to witness the Northern Lights in all their glory. In this guide, I'll share my most valuable tips to help you maximize your chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis in Finland.

Aurora Finland - What Are the Northern Lights?
The Aurora Borealis occurs when charged particles from the Sun collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, causing them to glow in vivid colors.
- Green is the most common color, produced by oxygen atoms at lower altitudes.
- Red and pink appear higher up and are rarer but visible during strong solar storms.
- Blue and purple hues come from nitrogen reactions - these are exceptionally rare and mesmerizing.
Every shade dancing across the sky is a reminder of the powerful interaction between the Sun and Earth's magnetic field.

How to Prepare for a Northern Lights Hunt
Aurora chasing often means standing outside in Arctic conditions for hours. It's important to be ready for that.
Dress warmly: layer with merino wool, add insulation, and wear waterproof outer layers. Bring warm boots, gloves, and snacks.
On our guided tours, we often bring a portable fire setup with us. Enjoying a campfire under the stars makes the wait far more comfortable.
Be respectful and safe: avoid private properties and stay visible near roads. Always park in designated areas or roadside lay-bys. If you're on logging roads, remember that heavy timber trucks cannot stop quickly. Safety first.
How to Predict the Northern Lights
Forget relying solely on the KP index. It reacts too slowly. I've seen some of the most intense auroras with KP values as low as 1-2. The key is real-time satellite data and clear skies. Many people try to track aurora predictions by themselves, but they focus only on the KP prediction and miss the bigger picture.
With the right tools and sometimes a local expert, you can be in the right place at the right time. Hiring a local guide is the easiest way to increase your chances dramatically. The market for guided tours has expanded fast, so there are many companies that are not very professional. I prefer to avoid the biggest companies and choose providers that offer professional aurora knowledge together with a full experience including campfire, food and photos. The cheapest price often means the weakest service. The best companies have passionate guides who are real aurora enthusiasts.

Northern Lights Photography - Where Art Meets Science
Capturing the Aurora Borealis is an art form that blends technical skill and creative vision. Modern smartphones can handle basic shots, but for the best results, use a camera with a wide-angle lens and a large aperture (f/1.2-f/2.8) on a sturdy tripod.
I personally shoot with a Lumix S5II and a Sigma 14mm f/1.4 lens. Remember: bright auroras, long enough exposures, and patience are key.
Laponia: el paraíso de los fotógrafos
Finland's Lapland offers vast wilderness, snow-laden forests, and dark, pollution-free skies - the perfect stage for the aurora. Here in Ranua, our hometown, you'll find peaceful surroundings, reliable snow conditions, and short drives to stunning nature spots. You might even see the lights right from your accommodation.
